Child and adult Amir

Since time passes, it changes some part of the personality of Amir and they mainly are affected by his kind wife and the education and also the actual behavior done by his father, a real man. As a result, Amir becomes more mature and sometimes reflects his past. When he knew from Rahim Khan that Hassan is indeed his brother but born from different mother, he began to understand what Baba had done to Hassan was not excessive at all because Hassan was not a servant. He is also Baba’s son, the master of the house. No doubt that Baba would never miss either of his birthdays and treated him so well, which always made Amir really envious and wanted to drive Hassan and Ali out of the house, which made Baba quite angry, although Hassan is always honest to Amir and did nothing wrong. Besides, Amir always teased Hassan. All these past things make Amir ashamed and regretful now so he decided to make up for it and makes his trip to find his son and creates a better life for him. Amir begins to understand the duty for a brother, a friend and also a father.
On the other hand, there is also something that never changes since he was a young boy. It was his dream and hobby – writing. He takes English courses at university and takes on writer as a job. He has already published four books and it is the beginning of his success.

Adult vs Child Amir

The main content throughout chapter 14~19 revealed the psychological reformation of Amir via the trip to his homeland in Afghanistan. The certain changes for his personality could easily identified as his life pattern changed significantly after his immigration to the states and the absolute effects of adulthood and career.

Amir's change is not dramatic but gradual. In my opinion, Amir's failure of aiding his friend Hassan in that incident was due to the fact of fears that ordinary children all held in the early years. Although most people put doubts of friendship between them up to this point, there could still be ways to resurrect the seemingly broken relationship between the two: " there is a way to be good again" indicates the voluntary expectation for help from Amir's close ones. Such an invitation left a chance for Amir to make up for his former childhood mistakes, encouraged him to face and get over with his regrets deeply inside his heart. If Amir was born to be coward and selfish, he could not agree to leave his comfort life and head to the turmoil of afghanistan.

Only immature views stick to Amir's childhood mistake. after all, the novel is about salvation and value of friendship through the ups and downs of one's life, not revenging or being revenged.

the changing of Amir

After I finished reading from chapter 14 to 19, I feel the changing of Amir, even though he contended with his thoughts a lot. When he arrived in Pakistan and called on Baba's friend Rahim Khan, he told something about Hassan and let him to look for Hassan's son and look after him. In page 226, "I can't go to Kabul, I had said to Rahim Khan. I have a wife in America, a home, a career, and a family. But how could I pack up and go back when my action may have cost. Hassan a chance at those very same things." At that time, he was in hesitation. This chapter shows the weakness and egoism of Amir, it seems like the preview Amir is coming back. In page 227, we can find the changing of Amir's thougt. "It looked at the round of face in the Polaroid again, the way the sun fell on it. My brother's face. Hassan had loved me once, loved me in away that no one ever had or ever would again. He was gone now, but a little part of him lived on. It was in Kabul." Then he told Rahim Khan that he would go to Kabul. From this, we can know how he changed since his childhoos. Some people assert that he is still selfish. To a rich and protected Amire when he was in childhood, his essential character is selfishness. He already changed a lot. We should find the changing from it.

Adult vs Child

Chapters 14-19 show Amir as an adult. Amir goes back home because Rahim Khan is very ill and would like to see him before he passes. Although Amir has spent so many years in the US, he is still attached to his homeland and the people that he left there. There is a drastic change in Amir's behavior once he is an adult, Amir visits Wahid on his way to find Hassan's son, and before he left he leaves a large sum of money under a mattress, this is a kind gesture as Wahid's family treated him with so much respect and kindness when he visited them, Amir knew that the family did not have much but where still able to sacrifice the little they had in order to make him comfortable for the night. (chapter 19, pg 242). Amir also shows the way in which he has changed when Wahid asks him who the person in the picure is, Amir says that Hassan is his half brother(chaper 19 pg 237), which is totally opposite to how he was one he was a child, when he was younger he was embarrassed of Hassan and often felt as though he was inferior to him. Amir has changed a great deal and he really has matured and has a warmer heart now that he is an adult and is dealing with his sins and doing something positive. I personally like the "older" Amir.

The Kite Runner Chapter 14-19

Through these chapter, I found a new Amir. Amir has grow up to be a man with a family, a carre and peaceful life. Through the tough life, he has became more mature raher than a little boy under the pretcct of his father.

But his selfish still lives in his heart, he thought about his own bebefit more than others', even for Hassan, a faith friend who offered his entire life for Amir. On page 221 his words shocked me:" Why me? why can't you pay someone here to go? I'll pay for it if it's a matter of money."His first instinct made me feel pity. He was reluctant to risk himself for Hassan.I thought he would be moved by Hassan's letter and started to regret about what he had done for Hassan. But he still cared about himself and betraied to Hassan's faith."I have a wife in America, a home, career and a family. Kubul is a dangerious place, you know that, and you'd have me risk everthing for...." There is a common ground between yonug Amir and adlut Amir, it's his weakness. As his descripted:"A boy who won't syand up for himself become a man who can't stand up to anything."

But finally,he went to Kabul and saved Sohrab. Just as Khan said :" There is a way to be good again." He final choose made everhting chang, including his weakness. He gained a sense of reponsebility, it was real new Amir.

kite runner:chapter14--19

After finishing reading the kite runner from chapter 14 to chapter 19,in fact,I think it is really hard to say some obvious changes for Amir. However,we can also find some changes bout Amir.
First of all,I think Amir was braver than before. When he was young,I think he always very coward when he was teased by others or did other things. However,on chapter14,when he knew his Papa's partner----Rahim Khan was very sick, even though he was affected by what he had done,he still chose to back to Pakistan to watch him.
On the other side, from my point of view,I think he was still a little coward just when he was young. For example,on page 202,when Rahim Khan tried to tell something about Hassan,Amir said yes and murmured. From this,we can see that even now Amir had the courage to back to Pakistan,he was still a little afraid to hear about Hassan. And then,on page 223,when Rahim Khan told him that Hassan was his brother,he didn't handle it sensitively,on the contrary,he thought that his whole life was one big fucking lie(page223),and then, he could not accept the truth and ran out from the apartment.

Adult Vs. Child Amir

I think Amir it’s a little different now but in a good way. He regretted some things, he know now when he was wrong. Maybe the difference is not to big but we can see how he misses everything. Amir spends a day thinking of Hassan, his past, and the mistakes he has made. That night, Amir dreams of Hassan saying, "For you, a thousand times over!" He’s thinking about the past, about Hassan, Baba. I like the page 222 when Amir finds about Hassan is his brother. He is angry. I think here is the same like when he was child. He still doesn’t know how to control himself.
When Amir was talking with Wahid in Wahid's home and when he was asked about the relationship with Hassan and him, Amir answered about Hassan: "He was my half-brother"(237 Chapter19) He don’t want to lie, he is more mature now.

Amir: New/ Old

It is very clear to the reader from the point where Amir arrives in America, right through to his adulthood in this point in the book, he is continuously developing and maturing.

He is a new established person when he goes back to Afganhastan. He has now published a book and became his own person, independent from Baba. When he was a child he was looked down upon for wanting to be a write now he has achieved his dream ad proven himself he is definitely a new Amir. Although he is the new, confident Amir going back to his country will make him uncomfortable because of all the memories he has hidden and suppressed from there.

On page 221 we see that Rahim is pushing Amir to stand up for himself and be assertive. He is using sensitive topics about how Baba said he could not stand up for himself. He clearly thought that this would spark Amir’s emotions enough to take action on the matter.

Amir still has some lasting characteristics from his childhood and these are accentuated when he arrives in Pakistan. He still has weak and cowardly tendencies.

On page 223 when Amir finds out Hassan is his brother he loses control and curses. he is still too immature to be able to control himself.

He does start revealing his true self and repent for his sins. He leaves money under the mattress as a gesture for forgiveness of his sins. Finding out Baba, the one person he admired most in the world had even bigger sins than himself really knocked him. But I think this also encouraged him to start revealing and coming to terms with his own sins.

In many ways he is still that little boy who we met in the beginning of the book. He has still not found his way in life. He has tried to cover up his past with this illusion he has created of himself in the present.

Kite Runner 14-19

The same thing between adulthood and childhood of Amir is his cowardice. He always keep himself from danger. For example, he couldn't help Hassan when he was child (P.73). After he had grown up and was 38 years old, he still said "Why me? Why can't you pay someone here to go? I'll pay for it if it's a matter of money." (P.221)
However, he had changed. He finally went to Afganistan to save Hassan's son. He could take action which might lead him to be dead. He said "And from this one last chance at redemption."(P.231)

Amir's Change``

I feel ashamed to complain this assignment is sort of the definition for the word ‘tough’ to me, because it is so long and takes more than couple hours to read it. To be honest, I just get through these chapters in a few hours. And I merely jot down some notes form it. I just can’t squeeze some time to plough through. But, I was really enjoy this book, and totally absorbed in, also I take a lot of interest in the story and plots.

Well, about the questions, with no doubt, since Amir left to Palestine and Afghanistan, he sure is change from the past when he was a child and his characters, behaviors as well as the way thinking are the way different form when he was a child, although when he got the message that he needs to go to Kabul to rescue Sohrab, he was hesitated and reluctant. “Rahim Khan, you can’t be serious.” “Children are fragile, Amir jan. Kabul is already full of broken children and I don’t want to go to Kabul. I can’t!” … “Why me? Why can't you pay someone here to go? I'll pay for it if it's a matter of money.” According to Page 220,221. And these shows Amir still is a irresponsible, even a coward.

Nevertheless, it is not hard to find his changing obviously. Say, the childish, selfish, and immature Amir was long gone, he knows as well realizes something he never give a though when he was the younger one. In chapter nineteen, page 237-238, shows Amir’s change to more like a true man, mature and responsible. Also, Baba and Hassan were pasted away, no one can protect and take care of him anymore, he had to force himself to be a new man to live by own, be independent and brave. I would like to say, he is different right now. One more thing, surprisingly enough, the life he has in the Palestine and Afghanistan often make him think about Hassan from time to time, seems he regrets and felt guilty about the things he did to Hassan, also he started to know and appreciated what Hassan done things to him. In short, I will say he has changed significantly.

Adult vs. Child Amir

It is still a perplexed thing for Amir to change him totally, but he did change his characteristic a little bit. In chapter 14 when Amir was told to go back to Pakistan, he felt like he was facing a dilemma---he is afraid of facing his past life, especially afraid of remembering something related to Hassan. However, at last Amir decided to go back to Pakistan to see Rahim Khan, which shows that he became more brave and mature than before. And then, when Rahim Khan told him Hassan and Hassan’s wife lived with him for a while and other things associated with Hassan, Amir could not face this fact---the fact that Hassan had died and the fact Hassan was Baba’s bastard. The reason why Hassan could not accept that Hassan was Baba’s bastard is because of his jealous--- from child Amir to Adult Amir, he never change his jealous emotion. “All of you, you bunch of lying goddamn bastards!” (Chapter 17, Page 222) Amir felt unbelievable and angry when he knew that Hassan was a bastard of Baba. Also, Amir is still selfish---“ I can not go to Kabul, I has said to Rahim Khan. I have a wife in America, a home, a career, and a family.” (Chapter 18, Page 226) In fact, Amir did not change a lot, he still has similar personality as he was a child.

Child Amir vs Adult Amir

After finish all the chapters i need to read in kite runner, i have to say that Amir is still Amir for being a such coward, but also for such a kind-hearted person.
Let's see the coward part, when Rahim Khan call him to go back to the Kabul and take Sohrab back, the coward gives a lot of excuses to say no, such as from page 220, "Rhaim Khan, I don't want to go to Kabul. I can't!" "Why me? Why can't you pay someone here to go? I'll pay for it if it's a matter of money." Man should take all the responsibility he need to take just to prove that he is a real man, but Amir can't when he is a little boy neither when his age is beyond 25 which should be called "man" rather than "boy".
But, on the other hand, we can't refuse that Amir is still care about Hassan and willing to rise his son after he died, i guess, deeply, Amir thinks that Hassan is his brother even though when he know the news that Hassan is his half brother, he intend to refuse it and fell anxiety about it. I think that Hassan and Amir's relationship is the clue line through the whole Kite runner.
Something changed, something not, i think looking child Amir and Adult Amir is like looking a time mirror.

child amir vs. Adult Amir

In the Kite Runner chapters 14 to 19, we see Amir as an adult. Even if this is the case he still acts like he used to a long time ago when he was still a child. For instance he still can't stand up for himself. This can be seen on page 222 after Rahim Khan asks him to go to Kabul to rescue Sohrab, but he refuses and storms out of Rahim Khans apartment. After he does this, he goes to a hotel to get some tea while thinking things through. This is when he finnaly realizes the main reason as to why Rahim Khan wanted him to return to Afghanistan, and this was to mend and get retribution for the betrayal of both him and Baba to Hassan and Ali. When he realizes this, he decides to go and get Sohrab (page 227). This is when Amir starts to act more like an adult and "a true afghan" as wahid points out on page 238.
At the end of the day, Amir's character gradually changes impressively from childish to an adult. He becomes a person who can stand for others and a true afghan.

Child Amir vs. Adult Amir

Amir’s soul wasn’t growing with age growing until he decided to go Kabul to take Sohrab. I think Amir was still a child because he was such a selfish and cowardly person as he used be. He cannot face to Hassan even beg for forgiveness after hesitating for 20 years and Hassan probably knew the truth. Hassan, a loyal friend, against Taliban not for his wife Sanaubar but Amir and finally died for him. He knew but still making excuses when Rahim Khan asked him to go to Afghanistan at the beginning. Amir was not as brave as his father, he was afraid of death. However, Amir made a decision after he accept the fact that Hassan and him were brothers. Our little boy grew and became an adult! He was not concealing the secrets to others as he always did. He told people that Hassan was his half-brother directly without any covers. (page 237). He was coming to save Sohrab, a little part of Hassan, from this death place, Afghanistan and no matter what he was not going to give up. He is a real man now. Thus, Wahid praised him as an honorable man and a true afghan. To be honest, I really surprised the growth of Amir, and the story touched my heart. I Proud of Amir and admired his determination.

Amir as depicted in Chapters 14 -19

Amir is presented to us in a different perspective from chapter 14-19.Chapter 14 begins when he is perplexed by the call he receives from Rahim Khan, calling him back to Pakistan. As much as Amir has to make this decision on his own, it is only bad enough that Baba is no longer there, and Amir has to do this out of his comfort zone. The Writer therefore brings out an independent Amir. He has been able to achieve his own dream, he has published a book. Therefore even the decisions he makes while in Afghan bring out a new Amir. He is no longer interested in impressing Baba out of loneliness as depicted in the beginning of the book. He makes mature decisions, especially after he finds out that his father whom he adored had an even greater fault than he did. Amir therefore in a stance that took great courage assumes position when called upon to atone for his sins and as if that was not enough Baba's sins.Clearly the Amir presented is different he acknowledges his sins and faces them for example in chapter 19 page 241 he says "...I had made a choice and that choice had landed me right back on this soil ." While this shows that he acknowledges his sins he goes further to try and atone them.He plants money in Wahid's mattress after spending the night there and acknowledges the fact that the last time he had done that he had done it to try and run away from his sins. Amir is now trying to pay back for his past sins instead of running away. As much as the writer has reached the climax of the story by quelling the suspense from the beginning about the phone call when he uses flashback as a style. He still leaves the reader with a lingering suspense on whether or not Amir will atone for all his sins.

Kite Runner14-19

I feel ashamed for Amir’s former actions at first and then proud of Amir. The reason I feel ashamed for Amir is he was still fear for his own safety and cannot be stand up for anything. Such as Rahim Khan hoped Amir to go to the Kabul and take Sohrab back, Amir was struggled with excuses to refuse to go the dangerous place, Kabul. Amir said, I have a wife in the USA, a Victorian house, a promising career, and a family who love him, he can not be given up good life to just save a child, Sohrab, the son of Hassan’s. When he was told that Hassan was his younger brother, Amir barely had time to deal with the fact and ran out of the apartment. It can be seen that Amir is still like a coward and lack of courage from these details, even worse thing is that he could not face to the facts. Thus it is the same characteristics with Amir’s childhood, it has no change. Things have changed at the end, Amir thought of words what said by Baba, his problem was someone had always done fighting for him. Amir thought that although he was old now, he maybe not too old to start doing something for fight for himself. From this detail, it is obviously to see that Amir became brave and decide to go the Kabul, go there to save his nephew, Sohrab.

Adult vs. Child Amir

After I read the six chapters.I believe that the adult Amir is different to the child Amir.
Although Amir can not faced to the past in the beginning, but it is just the beginning. When Rahim Khan talks about Hassan's son. He want Amir to take the child to Thomas's charity organization. "Rahim Khan, I don't want to go to Kabul. I can't" I said.(Page 220 Chapter 17) Amir can't face to the past. After that, Rahim Khan said the words what Baba said before. "Rahim, a boy who won't stand up for himself becomes a man who can't stand up to anything.", then Rahim asked, " I wonder, is that what you've become".(Page 221 Chapter17) And Rahim add the most serious words which is "What I'm asking from you is to grant an old man his dying wish." to made Amir can't say no. "Maybe Baba was right"(Page 221 Chapter17) Amir replied. All these seems that Amir is just like what he was in his childhood. He still can't give a hand to Hassan to get away from the trouble. But later. When he was in a smoky little samovar house. He woke up, he got the meaning of Rahim's word."There is a way to be good again"(Page 226 Chapter18) He knows that"Rahim Khan had summoned me here to atone not just for my sins but for Baba's too"(Page 226 Chapter 18). And then he made the decision, he decide to go to Kabul to take Hassan's child. Now he is not the boy who won't stand up for himself, but a man who is not only stand up for himself, but also can stand up for others.
Remember that when Amir was a child. The child from the rich family laughed at him to play with Hassan, they said that Hassan and Amir are good friends. But Amir deny with that. But when the night he was talking with Wahid in Wahid's home. Wahid asked about the relationship with Hassan and Amir. Amir avowed that Amie is his half-brother."He was my half-brother"(237 Chapter19)Although Author just described how it related to Amir's father. But it can reflect that Amir is not the child Amir. He have the norve to avowed that Hassan is his brother. We can image that if it was the child Amir talked with Wahid, the answner to Wahid's word"He was a friend of yours?"(Page 237 Chapter19) must be some words like, "yes, a friend.".

Adult Vs. Child Amir

Through chapter 14 to 19, compared with the adult amir and the child amir, there is a lot of change happened on him and also some character like when he used to be.
When he receive the call from Rahim Khan, amir was so worried about him then he decided to get him in Pakistan, and during the time he was in Pakistan and Afghanistan,we can find some differences and similar charactor on him, and what was the similar is that amir is still cowardly and weak like before, when he heard that Rahim Khan wants him to get hassan's son in Kabul, he refused so determined, just because that he was afraid of death and the danger there, from page 220, "Rhaim Khan, I don't want to go to Kabul. I can't!" "Why me? Why can't you pay someone here to go? I'll pay for it if it's a matter of money." these sentences are all good proof to support me. And this is the bad character what he used to be, but he also kept a good character which is kind. When he found that Wahid provided amir goods to eat and made his family had nothing to eat, he left some money for him. From page 242, " I did something I had done twenty-six years earlier: I plantes a fistful of crumpled money under a mattress." did I get the message.
Now let's see the different he became, when he known that hassan is his brother and found it is the only chance to be a good man and compensated hassan, he made up his mind to go to Kabul to get hassan's son even there may be dangerous. I am proud of amir, that moument he was brave.
After all, in my opinion, amir has became better than before, even he is still cowardly but who has no weak point?

adult & child

In my opinion, the adult Amir’s character is almost the same as the child one. First of all, Amir still likes Hassan and misses him. When Amir hearted about Hassan’s death from Rahim Khan, he couldn’t accept it, and he felt depressing. However, when Rahim Khan told Amir to go to Kabul, he wanted to refuse and escape. Baba had said to Rahim that Amir would become a boy, who would not stand up for anything, because he never stood up for himself (Page 221). Amir didn’t want to accept the responsibility which he should accept. Also, when Amir knew that Hassan was his brother, he could believe and shouted. Amir said: “I’ve just found out my whole life is one big fucking lie”, then he stormed out of the apartment (Page 223). The series of him actions show us that he was still milk- livered, and he refused accepting the truth, especially the most cruel thing. So, those two sections can reflect that adult Amir was similar to child one.
On the other hand, Amir actually changed. When he was a child, he couldn’t stand out for everything, but adult Amir realized that the unfortunately things happened to Hassan was made by Amir himself and his father. He though about saving Hassan’s son and brought him back to home. This is one of the different between his child period and now.

Adult vs. Child Amir

From chapter 14 to 19, I think there are some similar things between the adult character of Amir and the child character of Amir. I think Amir most time only care about himself, no matter how the people important for him. For example, when Rahim Khan wants Amir to go to Kabul, and to bring Hassan’s son Sohrab, he said he can’t. He said, “I have a wife in America, a home a career, and a family. Kabul is a dangerous place, you know that, and you’d have me risk everything for…” (In page 197) Amir refused Rahim Khan. This is Rahim Khan last wish, and it also is the way to end Ami’s cycle, but Amir refused it because he is afraid. It is as same as what he did when he was a child. Although he do it at last, I think it just because he know Hassan is his brother, and atone for his and his father’s crimes. Another thing is same since Amir’s childhood is Amir’s father used, “A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything,” this sentence to describe young Amir, and Rahim Khan also use it again when Amir became an adult, then Amir said, “Maybe Baba was right.” (In page 197) but he also have some differences. Just like the case that Rahim Khan wants he to bring Soharb back. Crossing those chapters that I read before, I think if in the child character of Amir, no matter what Rahim Khan said, he will never go to Kabul. But now, he went there. He goes, because he grows up, he can think more side of one thing, and he can surmount his fears. This is more better than before. So, I think Amir has some thing are similar, but he changed some side better since he was a child.

Adult Vs. Child Amir

I have to say I was really moved by reading these six chapters. When considering the changes between the adult and child character of Amir, the first image comes to my mind is that morning Amir was going to leave he left amount of money for Wahid's family. As he said in the book "I did something I had done twenty-six years earlier: I planted a fistful of crumpled money under a mattress" (Chapter 19, Pg. 242). Compared with the same action made by child Amir twenty-six years ago, we all can find the definitely different meaning of the action this time. Amir was much more mature at this time. He knew how hard life was, especially for those poor people. From the his own description, I feel his deep pain in his own heart the time he was doing the same action. He must think of Hassan, his loyalty to him, his smile, and all the special experience they shared together. The same action meaned a lot to him, I believe. After all these years, Amir was not that "mean" person. He was an adult. He had his own family. He knew what to do, what should do, and what shouldn't. He knew how painful it was to lost someone he loved and loved him from true heart. That was all he did not realize how precious those things were and lost many years ago as a child.
The other change I believe is Amir was braver and had more sense of responsibility when he became an adult. We all still remember how weak he was when he was a child. Each time he got trouble with those tough guys, it was Hassan who protected him. He did nothing. He was just not that brave to stand out by himself. But this time, he was different. For Hassan and, I believe, for himself also, he wanted to go back to Kabul where was really dangerous to all the people to pick up Hassan's son. I have to accept that his decision was made after his long time struggling. And maybe this action was just out of his inner feeling of guilt to Hassan, but still I feel Amir, at this time, was different. He was much more braver than little him years ago.

Assignment 7: The Kite Runner 14-19: Adult vs. Child Amir

Chapters 14-19, which tell about the beginning of Amir's excursion into Palestine and Afghanistan, reveal to the reader many insights into Amir's character. He is forced to reflect on his past as he is confronted with people and places that have changed since he has been gone. How is the adult character of Amir different or similar to the child character of Amir in his thinking and his actions? Give at least 2 examples to show how he has changed since his childhood or how he is the same.

Chapter10&11.

"Babe loved the idea of America." We can find that Baba's politics are very similar with America. From the content comes after the words. Baba told his politics to author when they were walking beside the lake. "There are three real country in this world."(P125) This showed us the importance of the three country's positions in Baba's heart. And the first country Baba said is America. After that, "he used to wave his hand and make a phht sound" This sentence made Baba's point powerful.
But when Baba came to America, the life isn't as good as what in his mind. He do not like the life in America. Or ot say, Baba's does not enjoy the life in America. On page 127, when Baba paid some fruits by check, Mr.Nguyen ask for Baba's ID. Baba was angry with that. Baba has never be treated like this before came here. But it's the life's style of America. "Almost two years we've bought his damn fruits .." ,"My father is still adjusting to life in America." the two sentences showed us vivid that Baba's real feeling in America.

Before I came to USA, I thought the life in America maybe not easy. Maybe the people here do not like foreigher strangers, or maybe the food in America is not suitable for me. But what I worried much are nothing. People here are friendly and the food are really nice. Like here is much better than what I thought before.

life in America

By saying “Baba liked the idea of America”, Amir means that America is the country that gives Baba much more freedom. Firstly, the father and the son went to the far away country to escape the suffering caused by war so it is much safer for them. Secondly, for Baba, he thought that living in America gave him an ulcer and he considered the America the brush savior one of the only three types of real men in the world. He owned a high reputation and wealth where he lived in the past, so he was limited by keeping himself as a good model. Besides, America at that time was a relative peaceful compared to Afghanistan. When they stepped on the completely unfamiliar county, he must be curious and hopeful about the future. On the contrary, the reality is always brutal and everything must be started from scratch and she was also supposed to adjust the new life and confront the culture shock. For instance, he took on the tough and dirty work in the gas station and lived in a narrow apartment with nasty smell and his neighbors were all blue collar ones. Just compare with his former life, you can imagine how cruel the fact was! Moreover, a scene impresses me most is that when Baba went to a store for shopping, he wanted to gave the shopkeeper the check but the woman also asked him to show his ID, so Baba thought she must regard him as a thief so he got quite angry and did some damage to the shop, which made the shopkeeper wanted to call the police. Luckily, Amir came and led Baba out. Then he apologized to her and promised to pay for the damage. The shopkeeper do not understand the feeling of Baba and she cannot believe that in the past Amir can even use a branch like a check so Amir did not explain because he knew the reality is cruel. Everyone is just working for support themselves to lead a life.

As an international student, I also suffer from the culture shock, although I had already knew something about the big advanced country via books, television, the Internet and friends before I came here. For example, the way that students arrange their time is much more free than in my own country. Although when students are getting into the college, they are still supposed to follow the schedule planned by the school. There is a strict time for them to get up and sleep. However, in America, it depends on yourselves. It is good to have a flexible timetable because individuals all have their own plans and specific situations. Coins have two sides. On the other hand, it must be difficult to compromise with your roommate. In particular, you meet selfish ones like me. My former American roommates are the crazy ones and they keep talking, laughing, the TV loud on and keeping the guest over midnight and sleep in the daytime but I have early morning class so I asked the RA to coordinate. Unluckily, things got even worse. They began to treat me as an enemy and tried their best to bother and harm me. At last, I cannot tolerate anymore so I try all my best to change my dorm and then I succeed. Now, I am happy and get along well with my new roommate. Anyway, I am still trying my best to adjust life here and I believe everything will be better.

Kite Runner Chapters 10 and 11

According to the chapter 10, we can easily find that amir's father was really found of the life in american. At the beginning of the chapter, the author tells us the opinion about american, american is one of the three true men in the world, he reallay love american, he thinks that american have the courage of opinions, and also, the reason papa moved to here is that he wants to give amir a better environment to receive the high education even also he sometimes meet something he doesn't like, after all, american is not Afghanistan, he gave up the job to run business but to work in a gas station, even two years has past, he still can't the life in american, because he is a so self-respect man, but he still try his best just to want to give amir enough money for hime to finish his education and also the high quality of life standard. So i can say papa likes american here.
For me, i also like american, not only because of its high science and technology and high life standred but also its world's best education and the freedom here. When i was small, i've known that american is one of the most developed country in the world, and i wish taht oneday i could come to american to receive a high education and experience the life there, but now, my dream have come true, i am standing on the ground of american, and through these days, i think i have a deeper recognize of american, i love it even more.

Amir and Baba in America

Baba liked the idea of living in America because like everyone else, America is the land of freedom. Unfortunately for Baba who was used to being treated like royalty it was different. Baba was used to getting anything and everything he wanted, he was respected by everyone back home and he was used to living his life the way he wanted to. unfortunately when Baba came to America he had a low paid job and was not living the life that he was used to. In chapter 11, Baba does not have enough money to pay for his oranges and when he is asked for his ID he becomes very defensive and starts to shout which scares the shop owners. This shows how agitated Baba was, he was used to getting what he wanted and was treated with so much respect.

As an international student i thought that coming to America would automatically be an easy life, but i came to realize that like everywhere else, one has to work hard. Everyone i have met that has not come to America thinks of it as some kind of luxury, but in actual reality America provides people with a lot of opportunities but you still have to work hard if not twice as hard to achieve what you want.

Kite Runner chapter 10&11

"Baba loved the idea of America" means that Baba agreed with the US policy especially, he liked Ronald Reagan. In page 125, Baba said to Amir,"There are only three real men in this world, Amir."The rest of them-" "-they are like gossiping old woman." He said America, Britten and Israel are the three country. This means that only the three country take action when something happen in the world. The other country will be just looking the event. Baba claims those real actions are necessary and admirable.
However, real life in America is different from the idea. He can't adjust the life in America. For example, he had conflict with a grocery store's owner with a difference of communication. First two sentence of page 125 suggest the differences between idea and reality very well. "Baba loved the idea of America. It was living in America that gave him an ulcer." The author uses italic for "idea" and said the life was stressful enough to get ulcer.
For me, as an international student, it was amazing for me that American people were very tolerance for other culture and religion. I thought American people are a little bit haughty toward others before I came here but they are very interested in other different culture and religion, and very enthusiastic to know about those.

Kite Runner 10&11

Refer to Baba’s feeling about America, we need to explain it in two sides--- one is Baba’s imagination about the United States, another one is that his real feeling about America when he met some dilemma. Baba’s imagination of America is great---“There are only three real men in this world, Amir…He’d count them off on his fingers: America the brash savior, Britain, and Israel.”(Chapter 11, page 125) what’s more, Baba likes the idea America means that he hopes to have the freedom ,rights, and equal as the Americans. Baba put America in the first place where he thought was the greatest place in the world. But it is one thing to imagine how great the United States is, it is quite another thing what the real life in America. When the first days Baba and Amir came to the U.S., they had a difficult life---“I glanced at him across the table, his nails chipped and black with engine oil, his knuckles scraped…” (Chapter 11, page 129) Baba had a comfortable life in Afghan, however in America they had a difficult life.

As to me, I am a foreigner for American---just as Baba and Amir. Before I came to the United States, I thought it is a not peaceful place, I mean, it is filled with dangerous things. But after I live here for almost one year, I change my mind--- it is not so dangerous if you can protect yourself. No one is perfect in the world. America has some good things, also it has some bad things.

The idea and reality of America

In the whole chapter 10 and the beginning of chapter 11, Amir’s Baba really likes America for following reasons.
First of all, through the discussion with Hassan’s father, he thinks America’s living standard is much better than Afghan, and this is one of the important reason that he decides to move to America.
Secondly, Baba is not regular person who has no interest in politics and willing to live without faith, he thinks that America is one of the three real men in this world.
But the reality world in America is tough; Baba is so self-respect, which makes their life even tougher. Baba end humiliating food stamp is a pretty good proven
In some particular situations, even Baba already moves to America for about two years, he still not adjusts to the life in America after two-year, he was embarrassed when he was trying to buy some vegetables without ID, the couple who opened the grocery don’t understand him and thought he’s crazy (beginning of page 128) and Baba thinks this is unreasonable at the same time. (What kind of a country is this? No one trusts anybody!)
He refused to go to the ESL school to improve his English is another typical Certification that shows Baba is resistant to change his style to adjust America.

The idea of america vs the reality of America.

According to myself and what i have experienced in America, i would have to say the idea of it is totally different from the reality in so many ways. One of these ways is that life in America is over exaggerated by the media and the people who have visited the country. I can personally confess this since i have experienced it. For instance, before i came here, i thought America was way better than Kenya, that life and school would be really easy, and that i would get easy money only to realize that as an international student, this wasn't the case.

This is why I think that my Idea of America can be compared to Baba's.For instance Before Baba came over to America, he used to think that he was going to lead the same kind of lifestyle he did in Kabul. This can be seen when he calls America a real Man (p.g. 125) showing respect for it, but once he got here, he realized the harsh truth which hit him head-on, when he, one of the most wealthy, influential men in Kabul, had to work in a gas station at a disadvantage of not being able to speak fluently in English, just to be able to provide for both Amir and Himself and if it wasn't for his pride, which was the only thing that left that he could hang on to, he could've commited suicide along time ago, maybe as soon as he got here.

the idea and reality of America

From the first sentence in chapter 11,” Baba loved the idea of America.” we saw that Baba really liked America and count it as one of three real men in this world. He did not like Jimmy Carter who he called a “big-toothed cretin.” because, in Baba’s opinion, Jimmy was not a hard man and he was not fit to run this country. “It’s like putting a boy who can’t ride a bike behind the wheel of a brand new Cadillac. “ On the other hand, Baba praised president Ronald Reagan who called the Shorawi” the Evil Empire”. As a matter of fact, Baba was still adjusting to life in America after two-year adaption. He got a lot of problems to his health, such as headaches, cough, and ulcer. Also he could not improve his broken English after two years study. What’s more, the reality America disappointed Baba most was the relationship between people. As Baba said in page 128,” what kind of a country is this? No one trusts anybody!”

I like American teaching style. It is speech free and I feel comfortable. But something I don’t agree with is lacking practice problem in science classes. Another different idea and reality of America is the building, I thought there are many high building in America. After I came, I found in most places, buildings are two-floor with a basement and I always wonder why.

assignment for Kite Runner

From my point of view,I think Baba just inspired the America. On page 125,Baba told Amir that there are only three real men in this world:America the brash savior,British, and Israel. From this words,we can see that Baba was really like the America. However,it seemed that sometimes it was different from Baba's idea. For example,on page 128,when Baba bought some oranges and wrote a check,Mr.Nguyen just asked Baba to show him his ID. This action might make Baba disappoint about his idea about America.
Then this is the first time I have been to America,as a matter of fact,I am a little afraid because I think the America and the American is not so friendly for foreigners. However, when I got there,my opinions are totally changed since I found that people here are always very friendly. Other that, before I came here, I am very worried about the safety here, but when I got there,I think this action is no need.

Baba's Perception of America

Baba was definitely in love with the idea of living in America. On page 125 he called it ‘ America the brash savior’. Clearly in the text we can see that the United States did not live up to his expectations. Its seems that the years spent in their new homeland up until the point in Chapter 11 took a lot out of Baba and really wore him down. He lost control of his inhibitions on page 128 when he took out all his frustrations on the store owner when he asked him for his ID. It is a very insignificant gesture to get so enraged over but a number of factors must have influenced this behavior. Baba was living in the past where he was a man of great influence and character, but now he was a simple gas station assistant. He had to serve others where he was used to being waited on. It must have put a lot of pressure on his dignity and self worth.

He obviously saw America as this place of power and offered opportunity for a bright new beginning. But instead he got a new life he never bargained for.

Amir on the other hand was happy with their relocation because it gave him the opportunity to escape his memories he wasn’t too fond of. Especially the memory of Hassan in the alley.

As an international student before arriving in America my expectations were very high. The saying, ‘ the grass is always greener on the other side’, applies very well to my thought process during my relocation to America. I visualized America as this country of perfection, power and opportunity. There is definitely so much more opportunity when it comes to education and America is very influential on the rest of the world. But by no means is this country perfect. I have come to realize that every country has its pros and cons. There are still serious issues to be dealt with. Coming to this realization has really made me appreciate and see the beauty of my own country. Amongst the animosity I have gained due to the rising crime rates in South Africa, I had lost the pride I used to hold for my own home. I now am proudly South African and will never doubt that again.

Kite Runner Chapter 10 and 11

Baba likes America, he says only the America is the “True Man” in the world and he definitely loves the ideas of America. But he has sometimes doubts about America. We can see that when he said “What kind of country is this? No one trusts anybody!” I think he just try to adjust with a new life but he still like America. And what I can see from chapter 11 that he is very proud of his son, Amir.
When I was home and I was thinking about America and Americans I was a little scared. Maybe because I was thinking that they are not so friendly and sociably. But now my thought is different. They are friendly, not all of them but many of them are friendly, sociably and they just want to help you. I have a good impression about America, maybe this is not so good because every person is different and I think someday I’ll be disappointed. I’m disappointed just for food because is not healthy and for school. Here the college it’s like high school in my country.

kite runner chapter10&11

Baba likes the idea of America because he thought America, Britain and Israel were three countries with own opinion and ambitions, they could do some active actions rather than just talk about unpractical idea. In his opinion, other countries were like gossiping old wamen--only chart about others and hard on the heels of the three countries. Baba liked Reaga, the man with ambitions, who took action instead of wringing his heads. It hints that Baba admired the people who could took action. It is the point of idea of America, which Baba liked.

The reality was fardifferent from what Baba thought. Baba thought that he would get peace and safety in America. I don't know whether he got or not.But I think that Baba got a potential sense of strange and upset. Baba had a tough time of adjusting America. He thought that everybody trusts each other in America, just like what people did in Kabul. He felt insulted by asking to see his license.

As a international student in America, I also experienced a tough time to adjusting the life in America. Obviously, it is really different from what I thought. It is more beautiful and bigger than my imagination. The people are fervidly and friendly. But some culture difference made me
feel sad. The way of having class is so different. The opinion what Americans thought is so different.

Kite runner chapter 10 & 11

In chapter 11, the author talked about their life in American. In the beginning of chapter 11, Amir says that “Baba liked the idea of America.” On the whole, Baba liked the life in America, although he met some things he did not like. In page 125, He says that “There are only three men in this world, Amir, He’d count them off on his fingers: America the brash savior, Britain, and Israel.” What’s more, he also went in for the president Ronald Reagan. On the other hand, he also had some things he was not satisfied. In page 126, But the Bay Area’s smog stung his eyes, the traffic noise gave him headaches, and the pollen made him cough. The fruit was never sweet enough, the water never clean enough, and where were all the trees and open fields?” “What kind of country is this? No one trusts anybody!”
To me, I am an international student. The real America almost like what I expected. It’s an open and beautiful country. The only thing I am disappointed is the weather here.

Kite Runner Chapters 10 & 11

In chapter 11, the author wrote that Baba like America’s idea. The reason is in page 111, Baba said, “There are only three real men in this world,” and he think that “America the brash savior, Britain, and Israel.” Although he likes the idea of American, Baba can’t fit in the life in American. In page 112, it said, “but the bay area’s smog stung his eyes, the traffic noise gave him headaches, and the pollen made him cough.” It almost looks like everything is not enough good. Also, Baba is not good at English, and some people in America do not like him. Just like Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen, in page 113, Mr. Nguyen said, “He’s crazy. Not welcome anymore.” After this kind of things happened, Baba become to the person that always thinks the past life is better than now. So, sometimes the realities are really different with your thinking.
For me, one of the differences between my idea of America and the reality of living in America is that to study in American college is more difficult than what I thought. I think in America you need work more hard than in China. One thing that is similar with my idea is there really have some rigorous law are you just be able to do something when you have the enough age, like drink.

KR Chapter 10&11

Seems like Baba and me has some similar impressions and ideas about America, when I done with reading the Chapter 10 and 11. I would like to say, for Baba, America is a place where he expects it should be excellent and perfect place to live, but, matter of fact, through the reading is it not hard to find America lets Baba down a little bit. Reason is he encounters something that America is not a totally perfect freedom country, even made him angry and regret. There is a situation can proof this. One time, Baba went to buy some fruits and when he checked out and wrote a check for the casher, then the casher asked Baba to show some ID. And this act let Baba feels something really awkward like some sort of discrimination. He says in the book: “What kind of the country? Nobody trusts anybody!” Not only the distrusts made Baba angry with America, also he hates the weather condition there.

On the other hand, we also easily to see at the first of Chapter 11, Baba loves America, he says only the America is the “True Man” in the world, because he thinks only America do some true things instead of talk too much like other country. Baba also admires President Reagan of America, he likes the way president Reagan who becomes Baba’s idol do.

Anyways, he definitely loves the ideas of America, but, the things I said above makes it hard to define how much Baba likes the ideas of America.

As a international student in America, I would like to say, as far as it goes, because the only place I been is here, Kent. So, my expectation for Kent is, I am completely satisfied with everything, except the weather in winter.

The Idea of America

As far as I can see, the idea of America Baba loves is how strong and tough it is in dealing with both its domestic and international relations. Baba believes Jimmy Carter should have not handle America. As Baba said,he is the boy "who can't ride a bike" but wants to drive "a brand new Cadillac."(Chapter 11, Pg. 126) Why he does not appreciate Carter that much? To me, I believe it is because Carter's way of dealing American affairs, announced America would "be boycotting the Olympic Games in Moscow" for example, did not fit the way how Baba believes the America should be according to the idea of America. America need "someone who took action instead of wringing his hands." (Chapter 11,Pg. 126)
In reality, Baba found it is hard to adapt to the "real" idea of American. The smog, the traffic noise, the pollen all made him upset. The most impressive image appeared in my mind to illustrate this is the time Baba bought oranges. It is hard for him to believe the person familiar with him for two years asked for his ID when buying things. It seems too "cold" the relationship between people in America to Baba.
I did not realise the misunderstandings between east and west until I came to America. I used to believe Americans just care about jobs instead of enjoying their lives. But after I was in the US, I found most of Americans do care about their family life much more than working. They take time stay with family members, talking, cooking, travling etc. Not the picture of working all day alone in my old way of consideration.

assignment 5 Tiantian

At the beginning of Chapter 11, Amir said that his father loved the idea of America. What’s that mean? It may means that he loved the country’s daring. Undoubtedly, Baba loved America, because he upheld strong country. “There are only three real men in the world, Amir”(page 125) is what Baba said to Amir, and he though that America was one of them. He though that people in America took action instead of just wringing their hands (page 126). This is one example to prove that Baba loved America.
However, America was more difficult to be adapted than Baba though before. There is one example, which happened when they bought something. Baba had written Mr. Nguyen a check and Mr. Nguyen had asked for an ID (Page 127). Baba quarreled with him, because he though Mr. Nguyen didn’t trust him and looked him as a thief. At that time, we could figure out that Baba didn’t adapted America very well. Baba lived in Afghanistan for a long time and he was famous and rich in Afghanistan. However, he moved to America and rebuilt his new life without his wealth and renown. It was hard and even he was already old. So, He love America, but he couldn’t fit it as soon as possible.
I could adapt America very well, and it may because that I was young, and I was familiar with America when I was in China. In the modern society, we can know what we want to know through TV programs and suffering on-line. People have more opportunities to learn what were others counties like. Those may be why I can fit America very well.

The idea of America

In chapter 11, the author said Baba loved the idea of America. Baba considered American, Britain and Israel as the only three true men in the world and others "like gossiping old women". Baba liked people who are strong and take actions instead of wringing the hand. He was excited with the strong policy against Soviet Union due to the Soviet's invasion and massacre of Afghanistan such as the rejection to enter the Olympic Games held in Moscow. Moreover, Baba had a worship of Reagan and became the only Republican in his building because of the Reagan's claiming the Soviet as "the Evil Empire."
However, there were many things Baba did not like in America: the smog, the traffic noise, the pollen, the fruit and the water. Seen from pp127-128, a quarrel happened between Baba and a fruit grocer because the latter wanted to check the license of Baba, who had bought fruit for two years from him. This made Baba angry and thought he was doubted as a thief. This ordinary procedure of seeing the license make Baba unsatisfactory with the country where he thought everyone does not trust others.
As an international the idea of America was not quite similar to the reality, the education style, for example. As I've learnt in Hong Kong for one year and know that the Hong Kong has learnt and used a lot from the western college education style, so I thought the style here should be similar, but the reality was quite different. One is the lecture notes, in Hong Kong, all lecture notes which are clear and detail will be published on the website and one did not came to the class can know what the professor haven talked about but here you can find no lecture notes on the website but have to take notes for yourself in class. The other is general education courses, in Hong Kong, one just to meet the credit needs for graduation of this kind of course, If you are interested in some subject, you can take all classes of the same subject. However, here you have to take all kinds of LER courses. For me, arts do not make much sense, but I've to choose a course from this kind though I think the course is really uninteresting.

Baba and Amir in America.

In chapter 11.The writer introduces as to Amir and Baba in Fremont, America Uprooted from their affluent status while they were still in Kabul. Baba a much respected merchant in Kabul is now a gas station attendant. The Writer also brings out the thoughts Baba had about America. Baba says in the beginning of Chapter 11, "There are only three real men in this world...America the brash savior, Britain and Israel." Baba pictured America as the Brash savior but he remembered 1980 when the US boycotted the Olympic Games in Moscow for fear of the War in Afghan, to this Baba uses symbolism to explain his new found disgust for America and her president. He says in page 126 "it’s like putting a boy who can’t ride a bike behind the wheel of a brand new Cadillac."
Amir also makes it known that Baba is disappointed in the reality of America when he says. For me, America was a place to bury my memories. For Baba, a place to mourn his" As a result Baba has a hard time adjusting and is therefore easily angered, this is seen during the incident with the Nguyens.
As an International student I expected academic life in America to be fast paced and include a great amount of dedication put into research work. For the better part, I have found this to be true stating an example of Dr. Katherine Rawson, an assistant professor in Kent State’s Department of Psychology, recently who was recognized by President Barack Obama and received the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. This has been instrumental in encouraging me in my academic field.

Kite Runner

Baba loved the idea of America. He said that there were only three real men in the world; it was included America, Britain and Israel. Others were like the old women who were gossiped at something. Early in 1980, the USA boycotted the Olympics Games which were held in the Russia. What the America and the world needed was the dauntless man who could take actions instead of the with no ideas, such as the American’s president Ronal Reagan, who called the Shorawi “the Evil Empire,” Baba pretty agree with the idea of the president and went out and bought the photo of the president, and then hang it up on the wall. Most of our neighbors were blue-collar people who under the pressed of the economics of the president of Reagan, however, Baba was only the Republican in that apartment. In reality, Baba can not be suitable for the around environment in America, such as the smog and noises of the traffic, and pollen made him to cough and the so forth. One day, Baba went to the grocery to buy some oranges, Baba without cash and write a check for Mr. Nguyen and he asked father for an ID, Baba was very angry and then caused some troubles with him. He said, “What kind of the country? No body trusts anybody!” Baba started to miss the past life, for Baba, America was a place to condolences to the past. These things what happened on Baba made him feel much different from the idea of America in reality. For me, it is certainly to say that America is different what I thought before I came to the USA, no one could recognize a new country so exactly before he/she comes. For example, I cannot believe Americans would not like to drink hot water, except hot coffee, so it is hard to find hot water at school, most Chinese people prefer hot water. This is little thing what I found around me.

But the young are full with energy and braver than the old. And they are the same when the old are young with the young. Even two can’t come up with each other; the most reason is their personal character works, but not the age different. So, age really doesn’t matter in people’s relationship.

I hold the point that age doesn’t matter in people’s relationship.
