Amir and Baba's relationship can be described as one that lacks mutual understanding between the two. Baba,Amir's father is introduced to the reader as a very wealthy business man in Kabul but regardless of his status, his relationship with his son is poor. On his part, he wants his son to be just like him. He cannot comprehend Amir's desire to read. This is seen on page 21, when Baba is on a phone conversation with Rahim Khan. He tells Rahim that he is worried about Amir. Basing his claims on the fact that Amir doesn't seem to share the same desires as he does.Rahim tries assuring him that all is fine. However despite Rahim's efforts Baba ends the conversation in a daunting tone , claiming that if he hadn't seen the doctor pull Amir out of his wife with his own eyes he'd never believe he was his son. From this, as the the writer reveals to as on page 19; it is clear that Baba is distant from Amir and as a result Amir digs deeper in his mother's books to escape from the state of loneliness, brought about by his father's aloofness from him.
Amir on the other hand, shows detachment from his father at the beginning of the book. Revealing this to the reader in a style of foreshadow, while describing a photo on page 5. In this photo, he says that Baba is holding him but his fingers are curled around Rahim khan's pinky. The importance of this photo is shown to the reader, in a larger perspective on page 32(chapter 4). Where Amir justifies his love for Rahim Khan . This takes place when Amir finally writes his own piece. He runs to his dad to show him his accomplishment but his dad is not as enthusiastic as Amir had expected him to be.He does not even take time to read it . Instead, it is Rahim Khan who offers to read his piece. After they left that night, Amir says " ....I sat on my bed and wished Rahim Khan had been my father."... It is still in this same chapter, that Amir reveals to the reader his thoughts on a normal father-son relationship: he thinks that all fathers are supposed to hate their sons.
For this reason, I find Amir and Baba's relationship unhealthy and lacking in many aspects required for a healthy father-son relationship.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the first paragraph in your assignment. Baba got anger because his son was so different from him that Amir may not take over his business.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I disagree with your second paragraph. Amir don't want to be detached from Baba. He said "Then I thought of Baba and his great big chest and how good..."(p.32) This means Amir desired his father's love. Thus, I don't think Amir shows detachment from his father, he restrains himself.
well, Amir realizes in chapter 4, that his father is not going to change his perspective of him .This was the 2nd time he had not shown any enthusiasm for his passion. The first time was when he told him how good he was in class, in reciting poems, "sherjangi" but all his dad said was " okay " as a result of this Amir also begins to detest his father and wishes that he would drain out his blood, this is a sign of detachment from his father.unlike before when he adored him.
ReplyDelete"He runs to his dad to show him his accomplishment but his dad is not as enthusiastic as Amir had expected him to be."
ReplyDeleteI missunderstood this part at the beginnning(..and u can seen from mypost). I thought Baba is not interested in this and it is a hard try for him to say "That's very good". I think this is enough for a father like Baba to say this.
A fully agree with your post. I think it was very good how you picked you picked up the foreshadowing in the beginning of the book. Also how you made the connection between the description of the photo and the future relationship between Amir and Rahim.
ReplyDeleteam sorry Sui i don't understand your question. well, if you read chapter 4, you will see that Amir took his piece to baba first because he expected baba to support him but Baba does not do this he actually doesn't even read it at all.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. The way that you show your points is very good.
ReplyDeleteTeejay, a provocative post and it has prompted some interesting discussion. Shunya's reply poses an interesting question: is Amir's detachment a result of feeling rejected by Baba for his different personality and passion? Amir is a very complex character, and his relationship with his father reflects this. I also am impressed that you picked up on the foreshadowing. Nice job.
