Assignment 1: Amir & Baba

I think the relationship between Amir and Baba is not good. Amir thinks that his father hates him, and Baba does not like Amir’s individual character. So they are distant, and sometimes their bond isn’t like the bond between father and son. They are relationship is unhealthy. At first, Amir always feel his father don’t like him. He doubts even Baba hate him. Just like the sentence from page 17 “I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all, l had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn’t I?” because of this, he don’t like talk with his father by Baba’s manner, even though he want speak with his father. Then, Baba think Amir’s personality is bad. He think Amir can’t protect himself and also can’t protect other people. From page 20, Baba said “there is something missing in that boy.” And “A boy who won’t stand up for himself become a man who can’t stand up to anything.” The third reason is they can’t communicate with each other. Some times Amir want, but “go on, now, this is ‘grown-ups’ time. Why don’t you go read one of those books of yours?” from page 4. How are about Baba? Baba does not like Amir’s personality, but he did tell Amir. Just use him way to change Amir. In conclusion, because of these and many other reasons, their relationship always bad and make Amir from like Baba to dislike Baba. Just like Amir said in page 27. “Most days I worshiped Baba with an intensity approaching the religious. But right then, I wished I could open my veins and drain his cursed blood from my body. And wished Rahim Khan had been my father.” They become more and more distant.
They don't have a healthy relationship, thay have some similar. Both of them don't think servants are their friends. Although they are have a good relationship with Hassan or Ali. I think both of them have the same concept of social stratum.

  3. i like the point about both of them having a sense of prejudice towards their servants or Havara's for that matter.i think this is a good point that has not been brought out on most posts and you should support it with quotes from the book.

  5. Xiaoyang, good list of reasons! I agree that the problem seems to be a combination of personality differences and lack of communication. But you also point out an insteresting similarity. Actually, the relationship they have to the servants will be a topic of a future entry!
