Assignment 1: Amir & Baba

It is for sure that Amir and Baba is distant from each other.
From the first four chapters reading, we can see that Baba, so called Mr. Hurricane is such a dazzling person who has a healthy and strong body, super business success and is respected by lots of people. Baba is just a person with strong ability, self-centered and a person who sees “the world in black and white” (P15). He has his own believe, and the one who he trust most is maybe himself. He conquer the deride of others and finally did some really good job. Though his son, Amir, who appears a little stronger than Hassan, still think his father is too tough to be like a father sometimes. The father wants his child to be somehow a real man, but it is too hard for a man like him to communicate with kid. And there is another point that Amir had thought about, that “I had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess,” This thing not only make Amir afraid of his father, but also a possobly reason that Baba is tough.
We can see from P14 that Baba brought Amir to a picnic about the lake. The young kid is interested in everything he saw and was full of thought. He asked father some question but he didn’t answer. Because he is preparing for a speech himself. As for us, this is not a healthy relationship and this is not a competent father. And from P18, Baba talked to Amir about his believes, seriously, and impatiently. The words “There is no act more wretched than stealing”, “When you kill a man, you steal a life” and so on, shows something and made Amir to think something more. But I think that’s just what a father do.
But we cannot ignore the deep love between them. Amir loves his father so much, that he “was so proud of Baba” (P15). In P14, the kid envies for “Even put his arm around his shoulder”. He just wants some more love from his father. But Baba seldom realized or knows what to do with it. Nevertheless, Baba always take Amir many where to play. Though he thought “There is something missing in that boy”, he still tried to be nice. We know that Baba hate his son to enjoy poems, but when he knew his is writing a story, he controlled his temper at last and let it go.(P31)

  1. sui, I agree with you for the better part of your post apart from the last part, when you say that "Baba let go and accepted that his son's passion is in fact writing." I don't think he lets go. If he had in fact accepted this as his son's passion then he would have read the piece Amir had written but this; as the writer reveals in chapter four is not the case.As a result, for the first time Amir wishes that he could drain his fathers blood as that was the only bond they had.

  2. Sui, I wonder if Baba is trying to be a competant parent, but he is unable to do the right thing. The family dynamic would be entirely different if Amir's mother were still alive.

  3. Agree with Teejay that I've changed my mind in a comment; And I agree with Professor, that if Mama is still alive, Amir may spend more time in family. and the story will be different.
