Assignment 1: Amir & Baba

From the first four chapters, I think the relationship between Amir and Baba is unhealthy and distant which is mainly caused by the difference of their characters. Baba is a wealthy people and has a great ambition of success; he is interested in things that are passionate, such as soccer. However, Amir is a sensitive boy and like reading books and poetry. The great distinction of their character causes the contradiction among their life.
Seen from pp21-23, Baba was always worried about Amir that his lost in books and his feeble personality. He wanted Amir to do things like a man, maybe a man like he is. Baba thought that Amir does not inherit his character and even doubted about whether Amir is his own son unless he had seen the born of Amir. Meanwhile, Amir buried himself into books, where he thought he can get away from his father’s aloofness.
Seen from p31, Amir had written a story and showed to his father. The boy wanted to get comments from his father but Baba just stared at him without reading a word. When Rahim Khan rescued the boy and dissolved the embarrassment, Baba even looked relieved and left the smoking room.
In conclusion, Baba thought Amir is not like him entirely and Amir always felt that Baba hate him, there is a strange relationship between father and son but it may not be so bad as it seems. At least, they both cared about the other. Amir always paid attention to his father’s word when mentioned him and Baba just wanted Amir to stand up for himself and become a successful person. What they are lack of is communication and understanding.

  1. A good comparison of these characters. I agree that they do not communicate their feelings well - this could help, although as a child it is impossible to communicate complex emotions like this. Even as an adult, do we communicate these kinds of things to our parents? I don't think so.
