Amir's Response .........................

When Amir leaves Assef's house ,and Farid asks what happened Amir's response,"we both got what we deserved" encompasses the past the present and the future. By saying that they both got what they deserve Amir means that Justice finally served its cause. Amir should have stood up for Hasssan at the alley before Assef assaulted him.This being the case, he did not and so, he saved himself the assault that Hassan got for his own sake.This is the past that this statement is in owe of. Also in the same past Hassan had told Assef that he would make him a one eyed Assef had he dared to touch Amir. This past was finally settled in the present when Sohrab finally plunged the marble into Assef's eye after he assaulted Amir.The future this sentence implies is that finally Amir would not have to worry about his past as he had atoned for his sins.
