"Let's just say we both got what we deserved."---Amir must have a complicated, sad and regretful emotion when he said that. After several years later either Assef or Amir was punished by what they had done wrong before--- that means Amir suffered a lot about what he did to Hassan and Assef lost one of his eyes.
After I read chapter 23, I totally agree what Amir said that they got what they deserved. He felt sorry for Hassan, because he treated Hassan really as a slave even though Hassan was his brother. Also sometimes Amir had jealous about Hassan, and he did not do anything when he had seen Assef hurting Hassan. All these things Amir did to Hassan make him get what he deserve now. Refer to Farid, he did numerous bad things before which makes him “slingshot by the brass ball” (Yan Chapter 22-23 poster). His lost eye is the best reward of what he did before.
All in all, it is fair for both Amir and Assef to get what they deserved. What’s more, the result should make me think about something---good people will get good reward, at least good people do not need to suffer emotional dilemmas.
