From the first four chapters, I know Amir and Baba are totally different people. They have different character and hobby. Baba is a reputable businessman with ambition and braveness in Kabul, and he likes business and soccer. On the contrary, as his son, Amir is cowardly and likes writing fictions.Obviously their relationship is not very good and Baba thinks his son is talentless.
First, in Amir's heart, he also thinks his Baba hates him, because his mother died when he was born. It's shown in page 19, it said" I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all, I had killed his beloved life, his beautiful princess, hadn't I? " Secondly, Baba think his son is socowardly and his son made him disappointed. We can know it in page 22, when Baba talked with his friend, He said"A boy who won't stand up for himself becomes a man who can't stand up to anything." They aslo have much difference in hobbies. Amir cannot play soccer well despite the fact that his father pin his hopes on him. In page 20, Amir wrote " But Baba sensed my lack of genuine interest and resigned himself to the bleak fact that his son was never going to either play or watch soccer.
To sum up, I got that the relationship between Amir and his father is not healthy. There is a gap between them.

Assingment : Amir and Baba
In “The Kite Runner”, the relationship between Baba and his son Amir is without a doubt seems unhealthy. One reason for this is that Baba and Amir don’t share the same passions. For instance, Baba is literally in love with soccer, and if it was a woman, he wouldn't hesitate to marry it. While Amir is “crazy” about literature and he clearly has a talent for it. This can be seen when he takes on his whole class in a game of memorization of poems which he ends up winning or when he writes his first story which turns out to be really good. Another reason as to why this two do not lead a healthy relationship is because Baba, even though he loves Amir with all his heart, he sometimes tends to act cold towards him. A good example for this can be seen when Amir writes a short-story, but when he goes to show it to his father, Baba just nods and gives him a thin smile that shows little or no interest.
However I think the relationship between this two is just a little bit misunderstood. This is because in chapter three, we see that all Baba wishes for is to make Amir a strong man who can stand up for himself, not get bullied by the neighborhood kids and maybe someday he’ll take over his business. A good proof of this is when he says, “A boy who won’t stand up for himself, becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything” (page 22). To me, it seems Baba’s ultimate weapon of choice was to show Amir some tough love, and this is why he seems like a mean father who doesn’t care for his son, but he actually does…only that he shows it in a different way.
Since Amir is just a little boy, he doesn't understand this. Also Baba doesn't understand that he cannot change a person's nature even if its for a good cause. This is why I don't think that their relationship is healthy or unhealthy, but just a huge misunderstanding between a father and his son.
Assignment 1: Amir & Baba
According to the chapter one to four,i found an unhealthy relationgship between Amir and Baba.
They were two quite different people.They shared different interets ,Baba liked soccer,as the page20 said:"real men-real boys-palyed soccer just as baba had when he had been young"Baba wanted Amir to follow all his conceptions,about soccer ,about sin (page 17),even his characteristic (page 22).In the page 22,Baba wanted his son to inherit some qualities from him ,like ambition and self -defense.But quite the contrary,Amir liked writing story and poetry.
Those differents above lead to a bad result-they had little communication with each other.Sometimes Baba kept himself aloof from his son even if Amir wanted to have a talk with Baba.Baba always said little about Amir's good performance about his interets,in other words,there is a lack of encouragement and understanding to Amir.In the page 19,when Amir told Baba that he took on the whole class and won in the game "Battle of the poems"He thought Baba would be happy but "Baba just nodded ,muttered,'good""It also revealed in page 31,Baba 's performance disappointed Amir when Amir showed his first story to Baba. Abviously,Baba didn't encourage Amir to fufil his talent about writing.
But they loves each other.In the page 13,I saw a sentence"I wanted Baba all to myself" It comes from his little selfish as a child,because Amir loves his father.In addition,in page 15,"I was so proud of Baba"those words ,Amir thought it was a honour to have such a great Baba.
In conclusion,the ralationship between them is：unhealthy and have some misunstandings but existing love to each other.

As far as I can see from these first four chapters, I think Amir has a delicate but typical relationship with his Baba. Same as all the fathers and sons, Amir and Baba love each other a lot. Out of this love, Amir pretends to be a passionate soccer spectator in order to build a strong connection with Baba although he does not like sports at all, just as what is written on Page 20 in chapter 3. And so does Baba. It is just because of this love that Baba desperately expects Amir to be a tough guy who can stand up for himself as he is. It seems like Baba does not appreciate Amir's weak gengle character at all, but I honestly don't consider this as what Baba said " If I hadn't seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I'd never believe he's my son."(Pg. 23) which makes readers believe they are totally different. On the contrary, I believe due to the same blond they share they do have lots of characters in common. Maybe it is not that obvious, but still exists without denying.
I do think they have a healthy relationship. To be quite honest, they have some kind of typical dad-and-son relationship which is much different with the relationship between mine as a daughter. Seen from pp21-23, Baba was always worried about Amir that his lost in books and his feeble personality. He wanted Amir to do things like a man, maybe a man like he is. Baba thought that Amir does not inherit his character and even doubted about whether Amir is his own son unless he had seen the born of Amir. Meanwhile, Amir buried himself into books, where he thought he can get away from his father’s aloofness.

A very good example of this is on page 31 when Amir walked into his fathers smoking room to excitedly tell him about the story he had written. Baba never offered to read it and brushed it off like it was insignificant to his life. Amir escaped from this form of rejection by burying himself in his mother’s books and with words in general. He was not passionate about soccer even though Baba pressured him to be, but he was passionate about poetry and literature. Amir was influenced by Baba to believe that he was not a real man because he was not a man with love for sports and hunting like him.
The two of them definitely did not have anything in common but a good father would have no restrictions to the way he cared for his own son. He seemed to long for the connection he would have had with his mother if she had not passed. She would have accepted his passion for poetry because she possessed it too.
Baba had more respect for Hassan because he showed signs of the qualities he desired Amir to have. On page 22 Baba is not only complaining about Amir’s personality traits but he is clearly also making a comparison between him and Hassan. He does not understand his own son and just because he is different to himself he comes to the conclusion that there must be something wrong with him. He even goes to the extreme of saying that if he did not see the doctor pull him out of his wife with his own eyes, he would not believe it was his son on page 23.
In the book Amir is listening to all his father’s negative comments through the smoking room’s door. What can these words do to a young child? A child who is in desperate need for his own father’s acceptance; but is finding it impossible to obtain? Should a child really have to change who they are to fit their parents model of their perfect child?
Rahim Khan is more of a father figure to Amir than is biological father ever could be. We saw multiple instances in the text where he is defending Amir’s honor and stepping into the loving father role. He is interested in the story he had written and offers to read it. He addressed Amir with the term of endearment ‘jan’ which Baba hardly ever used towards him. He even says he wishes Rahim was is own father on page 32.
